OGDCL New Hydrocarbon Discovery in Sawan South Block, Khairpur District

by web desk

In a significant development, the Sawan South Joint Venture has announced a major hydrocarbon discovery in the Akhiro-1 Exploratory Well, located in the district of Khairpur, Sindh Province. The partnership includes the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) holding a 20% working interest, United Energy Pakistan Limited (UEPL) as the operator with 75%, and minor shares held by Government Holding Private Limited (GHPL) and Sindh Energy Holding Limited (SEHL) with 2.5% each.

The well, spudded on June 15, 2024, successfully reached a depth of 12,442 feet and has since tested positive for gas. Initial results indicate a flow rate of approximately 10 Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day (MMSCFD) of gas, with a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 4,000 pounds per square inch (psig) at a choke size of 24/64″.

This new discovery from the Lower Gour B Reservoir Sand has de-risked the further exploration potential in the Sawan South Block. It is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s energy security by adding to the indigenous hydrocarbon reserves base.

The discovery was disclosed in compliance with Section 96 of the Securities Act, 2015, and Clause 5.6.1(a) of PSX regulations for dissemination among relevant stakeholders.

This find underscores Pakistan’s growing energy sector potential, providing a boost to domestic resources and reducing reliance on energy imports.
