Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a significant discovery of gas and condensate from the exploration well Pateji X-1, located in Block 2467-16 (Shah Bandar Block), Sujawal, Sindh Province. The exploration success is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to boost domestic energy reserves and reduce the nation’s reliance on imported fuels.
The Pateji X-1 exploration well, drilled and operated by PPL with a 63% working interest, is part of a joint venture that also includes Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL), Sindh Energy Holding Company Limited (SEHCL), and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), each holding interests of 32%, 2.5%, and 2.5%, respectively. This marks the third consecutive successful discovery within the Shah Bandar Block, showcasing the potential of the region for significant energy contributions.
The well was spudded on October 11, 2024, and drilled to a depth of 2,475 meters, targeting the hydrocarbon potential of the Upper Sands of the Lower Goru Formation. Using indigenous expertise and thorough geological and geophysical (G&G) evaluations, the well flowed at a rate of 11.7 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas, along with 198 barrels per day of condensate. The wellhead flowing pressure was recorded at 2,578 psi at a choke size of 32/64″ from the Lower Goru Upper Sands (D-Sand).
This significant discovery will help add to the country’s hydrocarbon reserves, contributing to the energy sector’s efforts to reduce the ongoing energy crisis. The success of Pateji X-1 is expected to save substantial foreign exchange by boosting domestic production through local hydrocarbon extraction.
PPL’s continued exploration success, especially within the Shah Bandar Block, underscores the role of collaborative ventures and local expertise in unlocking Pakistan’s natural resources. The company remains committed to securing the energy needs of the country and exploring sustainable energy solutions for a self-reliant future.
